The Asian community has been broadly labeled as the model minority. To some, positioning Asian Americans as beneficiaries of the bounty of the American Dream and as “almost white” is somehow supposed to erase the severity of the racism against Asian Americans and make it ok. The reality is It obscures racism against Asian Americans, renders Asian Americans invisible to larger society and implies that Asian Americans don’t need anti-racism programs (source: Washington Post, April 2021)
“Not Your Model Minority” is a simple and bold statement against this stereotype and its most strongly implied traits: COMPLIANCE and SILENCE.
