HOPE
16 inches x 20 inches on canvas
Original artwork with spray paint, stencil, molding paste and paint pen
2020 was a year that most would like to forget.
It was heavily defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to global social and economic disruption, mass cancellations and postponements of events, worldwide lockdowns and the largest economic recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Geospatial World also called it "the worst year in terms of climate change" in part due to major climate disasters worldwide, including major bushfires in Australia and the western United States, as well as extreme tropical cyclone activity affecting large parts of North America. (from Wikipedia)
Along with everyone else, I was relegated to my home for months during the mandated shelter-in-place. While this was both unusual and disruptive for everyone, I looked to take advantage of this unprecedented time at home to focus on cultivating my creative spirit.
I made a small collection of paintings, mixed media works and screen prints which I dubbed “2020: Hugs and Kisses” as a nod to the despair and hopelessness so many felt during this unprecedented year and a reflection of my personal optimism for hope, love, peace and change.
This was the first piece I created in the series. For the image, I juxtaposed two separate images of children and then digitally modified them to add unique elements such as their masks. I also added molding paste and added spray paint to give it texture so it appeared that this was perhaps artwork taken directly from the side of a cement wall or building.
