Food is the common language and foundation that has the unique ability to bring family, friends and even entire cultures and complete strangers together. My family’s outings and vacations have always revolved around what we are going to eat (and at lunch we always discuss what we are going to eat for dinner). My fondest childhood memories are the dinners we would have at my grandmother’s house with my aunts, uncles and cousins every Sunday.

“Char siu bao” is Cantonese for the popular steamed barbecue pork buns that are so popular at dim sum restaurants and a particular favorite of my kids, nieces and nephews. This work was inspired by my love for food and a conversation I had with my youngest son Brendan, who received a dozen of them from my sister for his 18th birthday and was telling me it was his favorite birthday present he received this year.
